Madison, Maine

There are many reasons I love what I do; one of them being the ability to travel to so many different areas in this beautiful state of Maine. One particular job took me to a home tucked into the woods on Lake Wesserunsett in Madison, Maine.

Every morning, I would head down 95 with the logging trucks and the rush of morning commuters, until the Newport exit, and then I would be driving more slowly through the rural towns; passing farms, churches, and empty homes sinking back into the earth. Tractor Supply, Dunkin’s, American flags sticking out of telephone poles, and then cruising into the logging truck, pedestrian, patrolling officers hustle and bustle of Skowhegan. I pass by Maine Grains (and highly suggest stopping there for their open-faced pulled pork sandwich- you won’t be disappointed), then up towards Madison. Pulling into this particular driveway, the tall pines tower over my truck, casting shadows with sunbeams pushing through. The lake is off to the left, with views of the mountains in the distance, and the lake breeze pushing up off the water immediately wraps you in its crisp coolness. I like this job site. Especially in a humid summer stretch.

This one is a refinishing job, which is our bread and butter. Bringing old floors back to life is incredible. I frequently get asked if I prefer refinishing or installing, and I honestly can’t choose. Both transformations are amazing. I love the alchemy of both. Each of them turns a home into something more than it was; giving spaces new life and new beginnings, on which to live, love, and create memories. While the process can be a grueling experience, the outcome is always rewarding.

These particular wood floors are beautiful 4 1/4” wide white oak floors. They have been kept in excellent condition, which makes our sanding process much easier. Once we are finished sanding, we buff them, then vacuum, dry mop, and put the first coat of poly on. Then a bit more buffing, a few more coats, and we have a beautifully finished floor, warm and glowing in the sunlight- ready for the homeowners to enjoy and make new memories on.

For us, it's on to the next project.
